As the first state-sponsored civil rights museum in America, the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum will shine a light on the heroic struggle for freedom and equality. This new museum will provide a necessary space for all Mississippians and visitors to come together and engage in meaningful dialogue to advance race relations between blacks and whites in the South. The Museum will include artifacts from the civil rights movement, including a hand-painted sign from the 1963 March on Washington, photographs, manuscripts, books, music, newspaper clippings and significant relics.

  • When can I expect the new Museum to open?

    The museum is slated to open in December of 2017, in concert with the bicentennial celebration of Mississippi statehood. The museum will be located on North Street in downtown Jackson, just north of the Old State Capital and near the historic Farish Street District. The museum design will connect the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum to the Museum of Mississippi History, with a shared lobby between them.
